Hydrant Flushing Begins Monday

Crews will work through Friday; run the cold tap if the water looks rusty

Blackgrove Light & Water crews will flush every hydrant in the Township this week, beginning Monday morning on the north side of the river and finishing Friday afternoon on the south side.

Superintendent Frank Odell said residents may notice low pressure or discolored water while a crew is nearby. “Run the cold tap for a few minutes and it clears,” he said. “And maybe hold off on the white laundry until Friday.”

The Legend of the Grove

Every old town has its stories, and Blackgrove's oldest concerns the Grove. What follows is the legend as the Historical Society has written it down over the years from the recollections of the older families. The Ledger prints it as folklore, which is what it is.

The story goes that the first families came in the hard winter after 1639 and made their camp at the edge of a stand of trees that was already old then and stood a little apart from the rest of the woods. They did not cut it. The legend does not say why, only that the first meeting of the settlement agreed it should be let alone, and that every meeting since has agreed the same.

And there is the old rhyme, which the Society has in four versions. This is the one most people know: “Keep the path and leave the bough, / Let the Grove be as it is now; / Ask it nothing, take it none, / And you'll be home by set of sun.”

The Grove stands on land held in common by the old families and is not open to visitors. The Historical Society asks that it be let alone, as it always has been.
